The sheer relief of watching a gifted new actor play, for a change, a good hearted, idealistic hero who sets off to make blue films and ends up sorting out problems between couples, is enough to make us not wince at the jagged edges which stick out here, there and everywhere in the narration.
The presentation could have done with some more finesse, and a lot better packaging. But hey, the heart is in the right place.
Indeed "Bittoo Boss" for a large part ambles forward with no seeming purpose. It opens with an elaborate Punjabi wedding which, quite vocally, pays its homage to Sooraj Barjatya. Lording over the 'shaadi ka dhoom-dhaam' is our endearing videographer Bittoo who shoots, in his words, not weddings but emotions, not bodies but the feelings within.
As played by debutant Pulkit Samrat, Bittoo is bit of a brat, but enormously sincere and idealistic. We don't get heroes like this anymore.
The script, written as a series of episodes representing 'Adventures In The Life Of A Small-Town Videographer', gives the protagonist a chance to romance sleaze and then pulls him out of the morass just in time.
This is a film that's breezy but never stormy in its impact. It works because of the director's sincerity of intent. While most filmmakers today prefer to dwell on the dark side of heroism, debutant director Supavitra Babul doesn't shy away bringing in a shiney idealism into Bittoo's character.
Pulkit, despite an unreal hairstyle, comes across with endearing sincerity.
Expressive earnest and quite impressive in his interpretation of the character's embarrassing, he is a welcome addition to Hindi cinema's hero club.
What brings down Pulkit's performance as a videographer who would rather break bones than bend self-rules, is the scattered narrative. More often than not, Bittoo Boss rambles aimlessly through what looks like episodes of a television serial strung together in a movie form. Also, the central performer hardly gets support from the other actors who all seem to be briefed to behave like Punjabi middle-class freeloaders.
Curiously, leading lady Amita Pathak's dialogues and demeanour seem directly derived from Anushka Sharma's Band Baaja Baaraat. Amita's character is a part of that recent movement in our cinema whereby small-town North Indian girls are shown to be self-willed, headstrong, defiant and slightly wacky... Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu and Anushka in "Band Baaja Baaraat" define that movement.
"Bittoo Boss" is filled with some genuinely endearing moments where the protagonist comes close to losing his stubborn values but retrieves them just in time.
This film is an uneven but likeable experience held together by the debutant Pulkit's performance. He's undoubtedly a star in the making.

Ajay Devgn New Hindi Film Tezz Movie Review:
This would be a rare multi-starrer film that hasn't garnered any buzz around. Even the one item song starring Mallika Sherawat titled Laila that aired maximum on TV didn't quite receive a thunderous response. However, between the lukewarm reception and the non-promoting, warring actors (yes, there were warring leads Kangna Ranaut and Ajay Devgn in the film too, if that spices up the film for you) Tezz finally makes it to the theaters. What the fate of the film will be is for time to tell. Meanwhile we give you a brief summation whether it's worth the pick for this week or not.
Story and Movie Analysis:
An illegal immigrant Aakash Rehna (Ajay Devgn) is deported to India for working in UK without permit and also aiding other illegal immigrants. He is separated from his wife Nikita (Kangna Ranaut) right at the time when she is pregnant. Aakash comes back with revenge on his mind and devices a plan to terrorize UK. He plants a bomb in the train that will go off the moment its speed reduces below 60!
So while Aakash is on his task along with two aides Adil Khan (Zayed Khan) and Megha (Sameera Reddy), Himanshu Verma (Anil Kapoor) counter terrorism chief is back from his retirement to handle his last case and goes all out to save the 500 passengers traveling in the train.
Priyadarshan clearly lifts off his plots from various Hollywood films and cares less about people pointing it out. After all, give us some high-octane drama, some fist-fights between two main leads, some romance and gaana-shaana and the so-called aam-junta will take it. Isn't it Priyan?
So there's flashbacks of love saga between Ajay Devgn and Kangna Ranaut, flashback of sorry story of Sameera Reddy, a sudden jolting of item song featuring Mallika Sherawat gyrating in a strange African mode and voila! Fillum ready!
However, ignoring the flaws, the thrilling elements in the film are attention grabbing in parts and keep you hooked to the storyline, despite you knowing what's to follow.
There are also a few in the film who show tremendous faith on Priyadarshan and deliver engaging performances. Anil Kapoor and Boman Irani top the list on that. The two deliver crackling performances and deserve to be appreciated for keeping the audience glued to the seats.
Ajay Devgn delivers his best sequences with Anil Kapoor while Kangna Ranaut, Sameera Reddy and Zayed Khan are passable. South star Mohanlal who plays a cop adds only to the humour quotient of the film by his deep south Indian accent and podgy self.
There was a lot said about the action sequences in the film and while some actually are executed brilliantly (read - the bike chase sequence shot on Sameera Reddy) there are some shots which have shabby graphic work on display (for example - the sequence of two trains passing simultaneously or even a fairly old Anil Kapoor jumping off from a building window funnily).
Artist Performance:
Ajay Devgn excels yet again. The actor has the perfect demeanor, attitude and physical appearance for the character he portrays. Also, those who felt that Ajay had cut down on action roles of late are in for a treat. Ajay's character has an emotional side, but it's the action portions, which he handles like a complete pro, that makes his character even more appealing.
Kangna is an integral part of the film, but the screen time is limited. Nonetheless, her sequence with Anil towards the final moments catches your attention. Zayed doesn't get ample scope, but he's fantastic in the chase sequence towards the second hour. Sameera gets to do some daredevil stunts and also gets a couple of interesting sequences to leave a mark and she clutches the opportunity with both the hands. Mohanlal, an actor par excellence, gets minimal scope. Boman Irani is fantastic. One can easily rate it amongst his best works. Mallika Sherawat sizzles in the 'Laila' track.
Technical and Other Departments:
Action choreographers Gareth Milne and Peter Pedrero, who previously worked on several international films, pool resources with Priyadarshan for high-quality action on screen. They do a remarkable job. Tirru's cinematography deserves special mention. This must've been an intricate film to shoot, but the outcome is at par with any international film. The car stunts, the chase sequences and of course, the sequences in a moving train are filmed with precision. Sajid-Wajid's musical score is satisfactory. The Mallika Sherawat track at the very outset sets the ball rolling, while the romantic track between Ajay and Kangna is smartly interwoven in the narrative.
Final View:
On the whole, TEZZ is a taut, entertaining action spectacle. Those with an appetite for well-made thrillers should lap it up!
